Key Moment
Kankakee broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but the Chargers finally busted through with six in the bottom half. Sam Scott (Deer Creek, Ill./Deer Creek-Mackinaw) got Sandburg on the board with an RBI single to right, and the Chargers tied it when Kankakee misplayed a grounder off the bat of Hunter Darst (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon). A Ben Higgins (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) groundout pushed across the go-ahead run before the Chargers got insurance in the form of a two-run single by Austin Collinson (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and an opposite-field triple by Jonah Burt (LaHarpe, Ill./Illini West).
Sandburg Standout
Israel dazzled for seven shutout innings before Kankakee finally got to him for a pair of runs (one earned) without recording an out in the eighth. The lefty whiffed 13 batters, didn’t issue a walk and allowed just five hits. He threw 81 of his 104 pitches for strikes.
Other Top Chargers
- Wynn Takacs (Tipton, Ind./Taylor) struck out two and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to get the victory.
- Collinson 1 for 2, two walks, run, two RBIs
